"My name is Rayna Hagie. I am a senior in the Outdoor Adventure Leadership major here at SOU, and am very fortunate to be learning from the power combo of Adam, Erik, and Steve. The OAL major is one of the newest and fastest growing at SOU and our instructors work incredibly hard to provide us with every opportunity for growth. I don’t think we can really thank you enough.I was drawn to this major partly because my tent is my dream house, but also because no other major gets students outside experiencing the world on a regular basis, or provides them with opportunities to share and teach their passion to other students. In the year and a half that I’ve fully been a part of OAL, I have hiked more mountains, climbed more rocks, and rafted more rivers than many people my age, and this past summer, through this major, I got to trek through Nepal's mountains and see their rivers.
Now as if the OAL major wasn’t awesome enough, I am fortunate enough to also be part of SOU’s Outdoor Program, or “Adventure Resource Center.” Our main goal at the OP is to get students access to the outdoors, whether it’s through gear rentals, student-led hiking, climbing, biking, or rafting trips, or community-wide events such as the upcoming Ski Swap. Beyond getting people out and falling in love with southern Oregon, the OP provides students with opportunities to give back through service-centered trips. Not all of the OP staff are OAL majors, but for those of us who are, the OP provides us with incredible opportunities to further practice the leadership and stewardship we’ve learned in our major classes."
